Magic Open Preseason Tonight in Charlotte
By Matthew Gardner | October 10, 2006
The Orlando Magic kick off the 2006 preseason tonight when they visit Charlotte Bobcats Arena for a clash with their Southeast Division rivals.
The game kicks off at 7:00pm ET and you can listen to it on the Magic Radio Network, including WDBO AM 580 in Orlando.
After a strong, but intense training camp, the Magic will hobble into North Carolina missing some of its key components.
Rookie J.J. Redick will not be in the lineup in his return to his college state while resting his left foot (plantar fascia). Fellow guards Jameer Nelson (concussion) and Carlos Arroyo (strained abdominal) will also be out.
Also sitting out the preseason opener will be forwards Tony Battie (sore right knee), Trevor Ariza (bruised right foot) and Hedo Turkoglu (illness).
That means the Magic will rally behind their emerging leader Dwight Howard, who returns to NBA action after a summer full of Team USA action. Howard had a strong training camp, which included a 24-point, 6 block performance in Saturday's team scrimmage.
Also expected to join Howard in tonight's starting lineup will be Grant Hill, Darko Milicic and Travis Diener.
The remaining eight players that will suit up for the Magic tonight are Pat Garrity, Bo Outlaw, Keyon Dooling, format Bobcat Keith Bogans and rookies James Augustine, Kasib Powell and Jackie Manuel.
For the Bobcats, tonight marks the debut of rookie Adam Morrison, the standout first round selection out of Gonzaga. Morrison is expected to make a major contribution to an up-and-coming Charlotte team that is ready to remove the "expansion team" label and move into post-season play.
This year's Bobcats squad also features second-year players Sean May and Raymond Felton, along with 2004 first round pick Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace, the fifth-year player who had a sensational season in 2005-06, averaging a career-best 15.2 ppg.
The Magic play their first three preseason games on the road before returning home on October 17 when they host the Atlanta Hawks. Right now, Magic fans can purchase seats to all four preseason home games for only $40.
