Beyer a Perfect Fit

By Nick Adams | October 2, 2007

When Stan Van Gundy was hired as head coach in June, he looked to an old friend for some assistance on the Magic bench.

Bob Beyer was named assistant coach of the Magic on June 27, 2007, and joins the Magic after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Dayton.

Beyer reunites with Van Gundy after having been an assistant under Van Gundy when he was head coach at the University of Wisconsin. The two kept in touch, and when Beyer heard Van Gundy was hired with the Magic, Beyer called Van Gundy to congratulate him.

“I called Stan to congratulating him on the job, we got to talking, and he said he wanted me to help him. I was extremely excited because I know the quality of coach that Stan is and to be his assistant is a great situation to be in. Everything worked out pretty good for the both of us.”

Beyer is not only excited about working with Stan, but he is also excited about living in Orlando and working for the entire Magic Organization.

“I think Orlando is a great place. The city and the organization has people from top to bottom who really care about winning a championship here. The people are great and I am really enjoying the city.”

Beyer is no stranger to coaching in the NBA as he served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors in 2003-04, and was an advance scout during the 2004-05 campaign.

A native of LeRoy, NY, Beyer spent two seasons (2001-03) as an assistant coach at Texas Tech under Bob Knight. Prior to joining the Red Raiders, he was an assistant at Northwestern for three seasons (1997-2000). From 1994-97, Beyer was the head coach at Siena College. He also served as an assistant coach at Siena (1989-93) and Albany (1985-89).

Out of all his experiences in coaching, Beyer prefers the professional level.

“I really enjoy the professional level. I had some really good opportunities at the collegiate level and worked with some great coaches, but I like the professional level because you can just focus more on the game of basketball.”

Working much of his coaching experiences as an assistant, Beyer is passionate about his role with the Magic.

“I really like working individually with each player. I think it is important as an assistant to keep the players game in rhythm. I like being an assistant to a great coach like Stan and helping him with game planning plus making suggestions to help the team.”

Born on December 10, 1961, Beyer earned his bachelor of arts in history from Alfred State College in 1984. He also carried minors in coaching, writing and secondary education. While coaching at the University at Albany, he received a master's degree in curriculum planning and development.

Beyer’s experience, knowledge, and positive attitude will only benefit the Magic as they look forward to a promising season.
