As the highest Russian-born draft pick in NBA history, Yaroslav Korolev enters 2005-06 with a great deal of learning ahead. The affable 6-9 rookie has tantalizing potential as a big guard, but he'll have to endure the traditional rookie adjustment to the NBA. Yet despite the bumps and bruises that no doubt lie ahead, the future looks bright for the Clippers' teenager. “Sometimes you forget that he is 18 years old,” said Dunleavy about Yaroslav earlier this month. “Anytime I start thinking of him in terms of that he is 18, I love him. In terms of stepping in and doing what he can do, we’ll see. Like a little flower, we’ll keep watering him and see what grows. He’s learning and he’s not out-classed in any way.” After a 10 point and 4 rebound performance against Golden State this preseason, young Korolev is clearly growing each game and if this trend continues---he'll be a pleasant surprise for the LACs and a problem for opposing game plans.

Legendary broadcaster Ralph Lawler checks in with his preseason player predictions:
"Well---who knows? No question the talent and potential are there. Time will tell how soon that potential will be realized. If he can make a contribution this year, the Clippers bench will be "off the charts." He’s only 18 and he’ll be adjusting not just to the NBA game, but a new country and a totally new way of life."
While we love Yaroslav's upside, the 18 year old may not pay significant fantasy dividends in 2005-06. Mike Dunleavy and Co. have been impressed by Korolev's progress thus far, but the rookie will need to improve his defensive play if he is to garner significant minutes this year. However, once he adjusts to the NBA game, he has the potential to fill up a boxscore.
