As the Clippers' second round selection approached on Draft Night 2005, things were very tense in the LAC Draft Headquarters. The club was targeting an ACC guard and each pick late first round and early second round selection drew sighs of relief. When Atlanta picked Salim Stoudemire with the 32nd choice, smiles were abound as the basketball operation department got their man - Duke's Daniel Ewing. For his part, Ewing was equally excited to join a Blue Devil-friendly Clippers roster. “We have a little Duke bond going here,” joked Ewing in Santa Barbara. “A lot of guys are looking out for me and trying to make me better." Ewing has already displayed poise beyond his years this preseason, pouring in 11.0 ppg while maintaining a solid 3 to 1 assist to turnover ratio over a recent four-game stretch. While significant minutes may be hard to come by in Mike Dunleavy's loaded backcourt, look for Ewing to be ready this season whenever his name is called.

Legendary broadcaster Ralph Lawler checks in with his preseason player predictions:
"This team has had good success with Duke players and I liked what I saw of him in the Las Vegas Summer League. I think he'll be able to defend and score in the NBA."
Rookies are always a tough call in fantasy basketball. Few first-year players can avoid the traditional ups and downs of their first NBA season, which consequently causes some roto owners to lose some sleep during the season. However, with four years of Duke basketball under his belt, Daniel Ewing appears to be very polished for a rookie. He's posted averages of 8.8 ppg and 2.7 apg this preseason on 51.4% shooting and has already impressed the Clippers coaching staff with his play on both ends of the court. So while you may be wary of rookies, don't rule out Ewing if you need a free agent pickup early on in the season. He may be gone if you wait.
